Why We Collaborate with Artisans Across Our Country: A Journey of Rediscovery

When my dad first started this business, I didn't fully appreciate the value of his craft. Despite being a musician and understanding the cultural significance of art through my experience with classical music, I failed to see the artistry in his leatherwork. My dad, with only a 6th-grade education, devoted his life to creating beautiful handcrafted items, yet I couldn't see the value in it.

I couldn't see the value in it because, to me, it didn't offer the kind of substantial income that would provide the lifestyle I envisioned—good schools, nice cars, and financial security. You see, even though my life wasn't necessarily one of poverty, it wasn't always easy either. There were moments when I couldn't take a test at school because my dad hadn't been able to pay the fees on time, and I found myself pushing our car down the main streets more than once because it had broken down.

What I'm trying to say is, I didn't see a lucrative future in my father's craft. I envisioned myself pursuing a more glamorous, high-paying career (or so I thought at the time). The artistry of leatherwork didn't seem like the path that would lead to success, at least not the kind of success I was aiming for back then.

As the years passed, I began to understand not only the intricacies of crafting leather goods—especially handbags—but also the immense value of the artisans behind them. My perspective shifted dramatically when I had the opportunity to travel to Asia and Europe and study in the United States. In my travels, I discovered other artisans, their unique crafts, and how their success was largely due to the fact that their countrymen embraced their art, supported it by shopping locally, and wore it with pride before turning to any other brand.

It also took educating myself to truly grasp why countries like Italy were so successful in leather making. I learned that their success was not only in the value they placed on raw materials but, more importantly, on the artisans themselves. They understood that the true essence of luxury and craftsmanship lay in the hands of these skilled workers.

Little did I know that all of these experiences were preparing me to be able and willing to undertake a second-generation calling. When my dad passed away in 2014, I fully stepped into the business he was so passionate about. His dream was always for us, his children, to continue the legacy he had worked so hard to build. But it wasn't just his dream—it was a vision shared and supported by my mother, who was the strength behind the scenes.

My mother believed in my father's vision long before we did. She constantly encouraged us to understand that to break stereotypes and create meaningful change, we had to be determined and have a clear sense of purpose. It was her unwavering belief in both his work and the values of the family that helped shape the business into what it is today. Together, their partnership became the foundation of the business, built not only on craftsmanship but on the idea that true success requires passion, perseverance, and unity.

As I took on this new responsibility, I began to understand the deeper meaning behind my father's work. I realized that stepping into his shoes wasn't just about continuing the business—it was about embracing a legacy. And so, with my brother and sister, I embarked on a journey that took us across the country, in search of the raw materials and connections that would help us understand what my parents had always known: the true value of our artisans.

Traveling across the country with my siblings, I met pottery artists, natural fiber weavers, and textile artisans—talented individuals creating stunning works of art with their hands—yet their value was largely overlooked by society. It became clear that as a country, we were making a huge mistake by not fully appreciating the cultural wealth and talent we possessed.

The talent and resources within Honduras are immense, and the craftsmanship of our local artisans is something we should not only cherish but promote. This realization led me and my sister, Julia, to start a blog, Our Community, with the aim of sharing the stories of these incredible artists and shining a light on their work. Through this platform, we wanted to educate and inspire people about the significance of handmade goods, to foster a deeper understanding of what it means to support local craftsmanship.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily paused this vision, we remain steadfast in our belief that Our Community holds immense value. It deserves to be shared, not just for the sake of showcasing beautiful products, but to remind us all of the cultural heritage we have in Honduras. We hope that through this initiative, we can encourage more people to shop locally, support our artisans, and ultimately, ensure that their craft continues to thrive for generations to come.

The collaboration with artisans isn't just a business strategy for us—it's a celebration of our heritage, a tribute to my father's legacy, and a commitment to preserving the artistry that makes our country so special.
